As Associate Editor of EMBOreports for 9 years, I wrote regular analysis articles that required me to study a given area of science/technology development and then write a critical feature piece for a wide readership. As Editor-in-Chief of BioEssays (a peer-reviewed journal in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology) for 13 years, I wrote monthly editorials on a variety of topics ranging from the science in the journal, through science politics, communication and education, through to scientific practice.
